The Latvian National Theater is set to present an intriguing interpretation of Rūdolfs Blaumanis’ play “Ugunī,” directed by Inese Mičule. The premiere of this new production will take place on March 12, and special attention has been paid to sustainability principles in its creation – visual dramaturg Reinis Dzudzilo has created the set and costume designs as part of the international Greenstage project, based on sustainable solutions.
The most famous love story in Latvian literature – Rūdolfs Blaumanis’ play “Ugunī” – is timeless not only because every generation deserves to experience it anew. This season, the production also strikes a balance between the two pillars of dramaturgy that historically define the Latvian National Theater – Rainis and Blaumanis.
It is noteworthy that in November 1919, Blaumanis’ play “Ugunī” was the very first production staged on this stage under the name of the Latvian National Theater, becoming a significant cultural symbol.
Signet Bank supports this production, continuing to promote the development of Latvian culture and theater.
Blaumanis’ works are surprisingly contemporary – they speak to human choices, passions, and inner conflicts that remain unchanged even after more than a century. The production “Ugunī,” created by director Inese Mičule and visual dramaturg Reinis Dzudzilo, allows us to see this classic work of Latvian literature in a new light and discover just how alive and relevant it is today. It is important for us to support cultural events that help preserve our literary heritage, inspire its interpretation from a contemporary perspective, and at the same time enrich our society, notes Ineta Done, member of the board of Signet Bank.

Theater thrives on stories – those born on paper and those that take shape through people’s trust and collaborative effort. For several seasons now, Signet Bank’s support has accompanied the theater on its creative journey. It is not just a partnership – it is genuine participation in the creation of theater. Thanks to our collaboration, several productions of Latvian plays have come to life on stage – stories that resonate with our language, our experiences, and our times. This time, with Rūdolfs Blaumanis’s “Ugunī,” the theater is also putting sustainability ideas into practice – as we move forward, we are investing in the values of the future. On behalf of the Latvian National Theater, I express my sincere gratitude to Signet Bank for its cooperation, investment, and trust in culture, which allows the works of Latvian authors to come to life on stage and touch the hearts of audiences, emphasizes Māris Vītols, Director of the Latvian National Theatre.
