Ultra bicyclist Arvis Sprude will be taking part in the WUCA 2023 500-mile European Championship on May 20 and 21 with the support of the Signet Bank. The race will start and end in Derry in Northern Ireland. The athletes will ride along the wild coast of the Atlantic Ocean and then inland. They will ride on the Sperrin Mountains in County Tyrone. The race will be 800 kilometres long, and the riders will have to conquer more than 9,100 metres of rising heights.
Lat year Sprude, who is from Kuldīga, became the first athlete from the Baltic States to complete the ultra-biking competition Race Across America (RAAM) in the United States. He completed the race in 11 hours and 58 minutes, which put him in 6th place. One month later, Sprude set a Guinness World Record.
With the support of the Signet Bank, I will soon be taking part in the WUCA 2023 500-mile European championship. I have done well at training with my coach, Toms Flaksis. In physical terms I’m in much better shape than I have been during the past few years. I also have a lot more experience, and I hope very much that this will help me to achieve good results in the race.
Arvis Sprude, bicyclist
For the second year, we have been delighted to track the victories and goals of bicyclist and ultra-marathonist Arvis Sprude. Last summer we responded and supported Arvis as he attempted to set a new Guinness World Record. We were very proud when we learned that he had done exactly that by riding 3,559 kilometres. We remain together with him this year as he climbs new heights on the way to the WUCA 2023 500-mile European Championship.
Ineta Done, Signet Bank senior vice president
The race will start at 9:30 AM Latvian time on the morning of May 20. Racers will depart with three-minute intervals, and Arvis is expected to start his race at 10:56 AM. The finish line should be crossed on the evening of May 21, and that is when we will learn who is the new European champion in ultra-bicycling.
