In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Song Festival tradition, director Māris Martinsons and his creative team have created the feature film “Zeme, kas dzied” or “The Land That Sings”, which tells the story of the era when the foundation for this unique cultural tradition was laid. The Song Festival is a special event that unites Latvians across generations, symbolizing our unity, strength, and love for our land and cultural heritage. We are especially proud to be part of the story of creating, strengthening, and preserving this fundamental tradition, which has become an integral part of our identity.
The film provides insight into the historical events and stories of the people who participated in organizing the first Song Festival, while also highlighting the societal struggles for equality at the time. Artistic and cultural projects that bring our nation’s stories to a wider audience are not only vital for preserving our historical heritage but also for strengthening national pride and self-awareness.
The Song Festival is the cornerstone of Latvian identity and a unique cultural phenomenon that embodies the spirit of national unity and identity. By supporting the creation of “The Land That Sings,” we honor the immortalization of this century-old tradition through the art of cinema and highlight its creators—individuals whose passion and love have laid the foundation for a strong and enduring choral and folk music movement passed down through generations. We believe this film will inspire its audience, reminding them of our nation’s spiritual unity, cultural values, and the importance of preserving these treasures for future generations.
